The Yaesu FTM-400DR dual band mobile transceiver operates on 2 meters and 70 centimeters. The new FTM-400DR provides four modes:
  • V/D mode is Voice and Data communication in the same time frame. Stable and reliable digital voice and data communications are maintained using extraordinarily strong error correction capabilities. This mode will be the basic mode of C4FM FDMA Digital HAM radio.
  • Voice FR mode uses the full rate of data capacity for voice data. This mode enables you to transfer clear, high quality voice data.
  • Data FR mode uses the full rate of data capacity for transferring data. This mode enables you to transfer large amounts of data, text messages, images, and voice memo data with double speed in V/D mode.
  • Analog FM mode is effective when weak signal strength causes audio drop out in the digital mode, and enables communication up to the borderline of the noise level.
  • The radio features an Automatic Mode Select (AMS) function to identify these four modes and select them automatically when the radio receives a signal!
Power is selectable at 50, 20 or 5 watts on either band. Enjoy very wideband receive from 108-470 and 800-999 MHz (less cellular). Four scan modes are supported: VFO, Memory, Programmable Memory or Selected Memory. 500 Memories per band are available. Each memory can store: frequency, mode, tag, repeater information, tone, DCS, antenna squelch information, memory skip information and transmission output. The screen background may be set to any of 5 colors (green, blue, orange, purple or gray). The FTM-400DR can capture images and video by connecting a USB camera (not supplied) and transmit and receive them. There is a port for a microSD card. This radio comes: MH-48A6JA DTMF hand mic, mounting bracket, bracket for controller, 9.8 foot control cable, SCU-20 PC connection cable, DC cord and Owner's Manual.

Yaesu’s System Fusion has been spreading around the world at a tremendous rate as the global Amateur Radio community becomes increasing aware of its ability to provide total integration and compatibility of both digital and conventional FM communications. Yaesu has now released the major firmware updates for our Dual-Band / Dual-Mode FTM-400DR/E Mobile and FT1DR/E Handheld Transceivers, which brings more flexibility in System Fusion operation.

AMS function now breaks down into the following operating modes that are fully selectable by the radio user:

„h AUTO: The both RX/ TX mode is automatically selected from one of the four operating modes (DN, VW, DW and FM) to match the characteristics of the received signal. This is the current AMS operation.

„h TX MANUAL: The both RX/ TX mode is automatically selected from four operating modes to match the characteristics of the received signal. And if desired to change the TX mode, by pressing the Microphone PTT switch momentarily, the TX mode switch between DN and FM modes.

„h TX FM FIXED: The RX mode is automatically selected from one of the four operating modes, but the TX mode is fixed to FM.

„h TX DN FIXED: The RX mode is automatically selected from one of the four operating modes, but the TX mode is fixed to the ‘DN’ (Digital Voice Narrow) mode.

„h TX VW FIXED: The RX mode is automatically selected from one of the four operating modes, but the TX mode is fixed to the ‘VW’ (Digital Voice Wide) mode.

All AMS operating modes automatically match the received signal on RX which is hassle-free operation as ever. We believe that the new TX Manual is most flexible for many of Amateur Radio operators on any occasions since you can continue to transmit the signal corresponding to the received signal without operating manually as ever, while easily switching between digital DN (Digital Voice Narrow) and FM modes in transmit just by pressing the PTT button quickly.

The new TX FM FIXED, TX DN FIXED, and TX VW FIXED will be also helpful modes for operators who desire to fix the transmitting signal.
As one more functional feature of System Fusion, we have added “Standby Beep” feature to our FTM-400DR/E and FT1DR/E; a courtesy beep is sounded after the end of the other stations transmission when communicating in a digital mode. This new feature must be useful for operators to easily recognize a drop signal of other stations.

Digital and Analog FM Capable
There is no to lose communications with friends who have not yet chosen to transistion to Digital. The FTM-400DR performs perfectly well using both Analog FM and C4FM Digital.

Image data which was sent from a group member is displayed on the full-color screen. This image data also retains a time record and the GPS location data of the snapshot. It is easy to navigate to that pictured location by using back track function. In addition, you can observe on the screen, whether or not transmitted data was successfully received by the member station. The snapshot image or received data is stored in a high capacity micro SD card. You can recall and send that image data from the SD card anytime. The pictures and data files may be easily viewed and edited by using a personal computer.

This useful function not only enables you to see which friends are within communication range, it also permits you to see at a glance where all group members are located. Additionally, this function can be used to send messages and image data between group members. The Digital Group Monitor applies to direct communications between members; it is not applicable through a repeater.

This is valuable feature for public service group activites, Search & Rescue operations, and any number of other uses limited only by your imagination!

YAESU FTM-400 DE Myke 09-02-2015
I have had the unit now for about 4 weeks so about time I gave my opinions on the set. Very pleasing to look at and the screen is very clear, brilliant without being too overpowering, and touch sensitivity is about right. Very easy to operate in FM mode and changing from Band A to Band B is very easy to accomplish with just a touch. The latest firmware seems no different to the original version (I have one in the car already) especially when programming the status text - still fiddly. On APRS the set seems to be stuck with Proportional Beaconing always on no matter how many times I turn it off. There are also other minor glitches with the beacon transmission interval. As previous reviewer stated the mounting bracket is worse than useless, I adapted a Garmin Sat Nav windscreen mounting bracket for the control head. There seems to be a lack of programming software for the iMac so everything must be inputed via the control head which makes it a slow and laborious task. If you wish to have an excellent VHF / UHF dual band radio then the FTM-400 is a good option, however I would go for the Kenwood TM-710 for APRS. The rating would be 5 if only using the FM or digital aspects but the APRS experience and the fiddly programming with this set lets it down so only a 2
easy setup, poor design mount Philip 17-12-2014
Thought I would get a radio for the car as I have a Kenwood 710E at home. The colour display is very vivid and seems to be good at most angles. The FTM 400 compliments the cars glass cockpit of colour displays. APRS programmed much easier than my Kenwood. My only gripe is the poor design of the bracket to mount in either the car or as a base unit. The base cannot be angled easily and has a screw at the back to attach it to the plate, so not easy to attach and detach so as to not leave it on show. I see that there is an optional suction holder that may be better for car use. On screen touch screen programming so far seems ok, not as responsive as a modern tablet screen. Lack of memory programming software is also not good. So initially pleased and easy to get up and running. Looking forward to putting it through its paces once fully installed in my car.
