I'm looking for a 2m (don't mind 2m/70cm) mobile antenna that isn't going to destroy a light grade bootlip mount.

I was persuaded to buy a monster dual bander at a rally last year by my son. By the time I got home it had destroyed the bootlip mount I had so I bought a big mag mount for it. Unfortunately on empty motorways on autopilot I tend to have a heavy right foot and after being rudley awakened by the thing toppling a couple of times I'm back on the original tiny dual bander I bought ages back (it's around the size of a 2m quaterwave).

So - I need a lightweight low profile mobile antenna - something like the old 2m 5/8 which were about all you got years back. Modern mobiles seem to go for pretty heavy duty lumps down at the connector end and it's difficult to guess from website pictures. I can always wait until I go somewhere and see the goods in the flesh I suppose but if somebody can recommend one that isn't going to tax my puny mount when I drive a tad too fast it would be appreciated.

i use a Sharmans NR-770R Dual Band Mobile which cost £16.95
spec
Frequency Bands 2m & 70cm
Max Power 200W
Length 98cm
Gain (2m) 3dB
Type (2m) 1/2 wave
Gain (70cm) 5.5dB
Type (70cm) 2 x 5/8 wave
use one on a sirio 125 mag at speeds touching well lets say quick and never a problem and works very well.

all i use is a £12 micro magmount.. cut to resonance as it was way out , maybe something to do with a good earth system iv got arranged on the motor for hf use.

anyway works fine at 2w with my handy and is very light and dinky... get a good earth set up and borrow an analyser to resonate and youll have a half decent little antenna that will fit in your glove box...

Thanks for the answers but they aren't what I'm looking for.

I don't want to use a magmount. I actually already have an NR-770 (or maybe a Chinese copy as I got it on eBay) and it is heavier than it needs to be for the length with a quite weighty coil half way up.

I guess either my right boot is way too heavy or my trust in the rather fragile looking mount I have is too low :)

.

maybe its better to get a heavier duty mount.. is the light grade mount going to cut the mustard at 70mph????
or better still fit a perminent mount on the motor.. you can kill 2 birds with one stone firstly getting a good solid mount and secondly a good earth bond instead of relying on magnetic coupling...

youll be suprised just how better a properly installed mobile antenna performs to that of simply sticking a mag or screw on type mount...

I am running 2 Maldol PMR-K roof rail mount one with a Yaesu ATAS-120 and the other a Maldol AX-110 have to say I am very pleased with them, Very strong (even at 100+mph :p:o ) Very well built and also woks grate with the ATAS having had good DX results :D. Also nice being able to just lay flat the aerials if going under height barriers then simply rise them back up. (Or you could just unscrew the aerial and take it off completely:rolleyes:)
