The 3rd CARS radio rally was held on Sunday 23rd Oct 2011 at Callington Community College. Attendance was down on previous years, but this may have been because of the forecast for inclement weather. But on a plus we had more traders attend and a big thank you must go out to: Henry Westlake, Robin Worsley, Devon & Exeter DX group, Camsecure, RSGB book stand, Zoliradio, Tim Walford Kits, Keith with his engraving machine. Vernon Heaton and Rich Electronics, both Vernon & Rich travelled down to Cornwall from South Wales, and last a special thank you to Callington Community College for the venue. All those that attended appeared to have money to spend as the traders seemed happy and the club “Bring & Buy” turned unwanted equipment into over £600 cash.

Martin Lynch and Sons kindly sponsored the club raffle with the donation of a 2M handie. This was won by Ben Hawes of Plympton. As Ben was not present when the draw was made, it was accepted on his behalf by Pam Helliwell G7SME, Region 11 RSGB Manager, also in the picture is Roger Hann 2E0RPH (CARS Chairman) and Dereck White M0YDW (CARS Treasurer).

The rally also had side stands for RAFARS RSARS the local repeater groups for GB3CH GB3JL and GB3PL. The new keeper of GB3PL was promoting the new IRLP Node Number 5392 which has recently been installed.
Dartmoor Radio Club also had a stand, and together with CARS were promoting Amateur Radio as a Hobby.

CARS are now running courses for Foundation & Intermediate exams and dates can be obtained from Chris G7UDX g7udx@me.com

Next club meeting will be held on 7th Dec 2011

First, a little bit of history.

Sixteen years ago I was approached by Bob Whelan G3PJT and Neville Cheadle G3NUG to ask if I would be interested in sponsoring (by way of financial commitment of course!) the HF Convention (HFC), which at the time took place at the Beaumont Centre in old Windsor, Berkshire.

It was actually the late Henry Lewis G3GIQ’s idea to get us all together. Being one of the originators of CDXC, he was aware that since the move from the yearly convention’s original site, the Beaumont was costing far more than the revenue taken to host the event. Basically RSGB was barely breaking even and, in fact, if I hadn’t committed my financial involvement in the first year; it was unlikely that it would have continued to have taken place.

Bob, Neville and I met and we agreed that Martin Lynch & Sons would support the “HFC” and become its official sponsor, the first ever commercial company to be involved with the Convention. We were all delighted.

Because of my association with the big three manufacturers, I suggested that maybe I could introduce one of them to the Convention, not only for financial support, but to work alongside my stand, promoting their products. Kenwood very kindly came on board, followed by Yaesu and finally Icom.

Over the years the HFC moved home for various financial reasons and indeed in the latter years, size. The now renamed “RSGB Convention” was expanding and every year, ML&S and my co-sponsor supported the event, appearing at Gatwick through to Manchester. Remember this isn’t a radio rally or HamFest type operation, it’s a yearly meeting of two or three hundred fellow Hams from around the world with one primary aim – HF and more recently, VHF DX operation. It’s a great place to meet, chat and eat (ML&S also financially supports and sponsors the Friday buffet) all taking place in a relaxed friendly atmosphere.

So for those of you that didn’t know how or why my company became involved in the Convention, I hope this makes it a little clearer for you.

I have also read recent propaganda and what can only be described as “sour grapes” from a competitor inferring that there is some sort of devious association between the RSGB and my company. “Locked out”, “covered up”, “mystery continues”, “the truth will come out eventually”. Reading this diatribe one would think that it was the promo for yet another Hercule Poirot episode, but sadly no. Nothing as interesting or well acted, (nor indeed reading the posting headed “Cause For Concern” on their blog website, written in a legible manner). The whole sorry outburst tries to paint a picture that “they” have been excluded by unsavoury (I am using their dramabased language now) means from “getting in” to the RSGB Convention.

There is no scandal surrounding the fact that an invite hasn’t plopped through their door to co-support the RSGB Convention. It’s very simple. My company has supported the core of the Convention for a long time and there is a contract in place to confirm this. Why should they not be invited? Surely this is at the very least “unfair” or indeed restricting their right as a retailer, they seem to claim? I guess you could ask Bernie Eccleston and his association with F1 the same question. He got there first, has supported it and got sponsorship of his choice for even more years than ML&S involvement in the Convention.

It was my personal suggestion last year that we should invite not only Icom but Yaesu and Kenwood along in 2011. They have all been associated in sponsorship of the Convention before, especially since we have more space at the excellent new venue in Buckinghamshire. I don’t want to turn the yearly event into a rally because that is exactly what the Convention visitors and the RSGB do not want. Neither do I.

Even more strangely, the same competitor has recently made the claim via a bulk email that the RSGB has run up debts of £300,000. Now I can read a balance sheet, and I know how absurd this claim is. The RSGB has issued a statement covering both this fictitious claim and all the issues surrounding my involvement with the Convention. You can get a copy from Don.Beattie@rsgb.org.uk please read it and once you have done so you will understand that there is no mystery over any of this.

See you hopefully at the 2011 RSGB Convention “proudly Sponsored” by yours truly. It is one of the most prestigious Amateur Radio events in our calendar and if you haven’t been before, may I suggest you make the trip. It’s over three days and a great opportunity to meet other like minded operators.

The RSGB Convention takes place on the 7,8 & 9th of October 2011 at Horwood House,
Little Horwood, Milton Keynes, Bucks MK17 0PH.

Probably one of the lightest 50Amp DC power supplies available today, the new MP-50SW111 weighs in at only 2.2Kilos (4.85lbs). Unbelievably compact measuring a mere 940mm wide (7 5/8th”) x 950mm deep (11 ½ ”) including chunky rear terminals and front panel knobs and only 90mm high (3 ½”).

This is the second member of the “SW” family adding to the already best selling MP-30SW111 30Amp version which has been available for two years from ML&S.

This shack supply is styled along the lines of an SWR meter with back lit display, variable Voltage (9-15v DC) with a fixed position 13.8V output, “noise-offset” control for the removable of any birdies that maybe present within band and a large easy to tie-in DC rear terminals and a switchable Voltage/Amps meter.

The current price is £169.95 but is on a special introductory offer of £149.95 including VAT. Its baby brother, the MP-30SW111 30Amp version is still available for £86.75

After months of negotiation, Martin Lynch & Sons have finally been appointed distributor for the famous FUNcube Dongle Pro, 64MHz-1.7GHz SDR receiver.

This remarkable memory stick sized device was conceived, designed, built and bought to market in a lightning fast period of time by its inventor, Howard Long G6LVB.

Many thousands have been sold worldwide and was originally produced as part of AMSAT-UK’s FUNcube satellite project. The FUNcube Dongle is the “ground segment”, or a radio receiver designed to allow anyone to try their hand at reception of satellites like FUNcube anywhere on Earth as part of a global educational collaboration project collecting information from space. However with a continuous coverage of 64MHz through to 1700MHz the FUNcube has found many alternative applications.

The new FUNcube Dongle Pro is available now for only £99 plus VAT plus postage and may be ordered here

As you know for our RadioActive event this year I ran a sunday roast party here at DCP for Radio Active and held two radio super raffle events with the prizes you kindly supplied. Now that the last raffle has taken place and all monies and donations counted I am very pleased to tell you that we raised a total of £894 which will be split equally between Cancer Research UK and the Big C appeal!

We feel quite proud that an amateur radio club can raise this sort of money with just a couple of events and although our members and visitors have been very generous buying so many raffle tickets it was because of the generous donation of so many good prizes from people such as yourself that enabled us to encourage them to do so, so on behalf of these charities and from me thank you and your colleagues very much indeed.

Best Wishes

David Palmer G7URP

Icom have provided a really nice surprise for everyone at the Friedrichshafen Ham Radio Show 2011 by previewing a new UHF D-Star Digital transceiver. Called the ID-31E, it is intended to show the continued importance that Icom place on D-Star.

This is the first public showing of this new model which will feature the following:

• Built in GPS Receiver
• D-Star DV/Analogue FM Mode
• DR Mode User-Friendliness Improved
• Directional Keypad Navigation
• Full Dot Matrix Display
• Slim Compact Design
• IPX7 Waterproof Construction
• Free Download Cloning Software
• Micro SD Slot

The unit shown at Friedrichshafen was a mock-up of the ID-31E. At present we have no details of the launch date/pricing.

Jon Davies (seen standing in the middle on the back row) should be pleased with himself. Not only did Jon together with Martyn Spence our QA representative get ML&S through another BS Approval to ISO 9001 (with flying colours I might add), but he enrolled himself at the Foundation courses set by the Farrnborough Radio Club and gained his M6 Call, M6MLS nevertheless. Also passing their licence are three new M6 calls, all ML&S customers. Well done & thank you to the Farnborough ARS for holding these excellent courses from their club site.

The award was received by Martin Lynch at Kenwood House, HQ of Kenwood Electronics UK Ltd in Watford Hertfordshire. Martin and his Sales Manager Richard Atcherley were welcomed to Kenwood House by David Wilkins, Kenwood’s Amateur Radio Sales Manager and Andy Dawson, National PMR Sales Manager, who told them that "the year on year increase in ML&S' sales of our radios, especially in the face of the recession, was achieved by your dedication to service combined with a first class product knowledge amongst all your staff."

Many of you will need the term EMPORIUM to be explained to you as you have only recently joined the hobby.

An EMPORIUM is Radio Shop with every conceivable type of wireless set in stock, all the bits and bobs to wire it up and a sympathetic ear to speak into when it hasn't worked in your station. A shop run by hams. Done for enjoyment, without thought of money.

If you have any money left after that Junk Sale, last week, (64 of you came to it), you may wish to invest it in a new or checked-out second-hand radio.

You know my views about buying wireless sets on ebay or from private sellers. It's CAVEAT EMPTOR, buyer beware. BTW, Caveat Emptor is an Ancient Roman military expression meaning “Empty Cave- the goods are hidden elsewhere".

It may work, but maybe not all the features are OK. Unless you can fix it yourself, it's worth the money to have an Emporium's 3-month warranty to have it fixed if it fails. You can still haggle the price, especially if you buy two items, but you want the assurance that it works to spec.

Martin expects you from about 7.30 pm on Thursday, next week, the 28th April. He is opening specially for RADARC and he offers coffee. He likes to go home to bed by 9.00 pm.

Now, who are you thinking of travelling with? Is he someone you can trust with your secrets about what you have purchased? Would you be happy to share the cost of the petrol. Will you have a useful chat about antennas and new rigs while negotiating the M3/M25 junction?

Can you find your way to Outline House on Guildford Street, Chertsey? It's better with a sat-nav aimed at KT16 9AS, but it can be done with a print-out of the Chertsey Street map taken from www.hamradio.co.uk which I recommend you to take with you.

The one-way system is not as good as Reading's. However, if you can get onto Guildford Street, no 73 is on your right, just after no 71.

Good Hunting

Another successful outing for the Lynchy Team. Here’s an image of the stand before the doors opened. Had a very busy day and a BIG thank you to all our customers who either bought off the stand or stopped by to say hi.

Richard brings with him a wealth of sales experience covering professional aviation, PMR, component sales and running his own motorcycle and car business.

A very keen Radio Amateur, Richard said “I am delighted to join the largest dedicated Ham Radio company in the UK and have actually been like most UK Hams, one of Martin’s long standing customers”. Richard will oversee three sales staff and back order processing from the ML&S store located in Chertsey, Surrey.

The National Hamfest, organised by the RSGB in association with the Lincoln Short Wave Club, takes place on Friday 1 and Saturday 2 October. It's at the George Stephenson Pavilion, Newark and Nottinghamshire Showground, Lincoln Road, Winthorpe, Newark NG24 2NY, which is close to the junction of the A1, A46 and A17. There will be a large number of trade stands, including ML&S of course plus the three main manufacturers, Icom, Kenwood and Yaesu. See the October issue of RadCom for full details of the show’s highlights.

I just wanted to thank you and the rest of the team at ML&S for your kind sponsorship of the UK Headquarters station in the recent Amateur Radio IARU contest. It's a little too early to know the final results, but we will be keeping an eye on the CQ Magazine website to spot the contest results, just as soon as they are announced.

In the meantime, you may have seen the website that was established for this year's event (www.gr2hq.com) which has the Martin Lynch and Son logo included. We have also ordered a set of 4000 QSL cards with a similar ML&S splash across them.

Finally, we have just sent out 75 x award certificates to individuals radio amateur enthusiasts that worked our station GR2HQ on more than 6 bands / modes.

Hopefully, this will provide some additional exposure to the ML&S brand name.

Once again, we are sincerely grateful for the financial assistance.

Our longest serving workshop engineer, George Eddowes passed away in hospital on Sunday 25 th of July.

“Old George” as we affectionately referred to him,  died on Sunday the 25 after a short illness.  I first met George back in the seventies working for Amateur Radio Exchange and George was one of the first customers to buy a TS-950 off me at my own store in Ealing, trading it in for an FT-1000.

He was a great engineer and will be missed by many, including his works colleagues, customers  and Hams around the world

His Story
As many of you will know, I've had a brain injury, but for me having to live with cancer would be unthinkable, and I am blessed that I don't have to do that. Watching those who have had to take up that fight continues to inspire me.

In acknowledgment of the continual need for funds for that fight, and with the help of many, I am running the London Marathon 2010 (my first ever Marathon) in aid of Macmillan cancer support. Some of you may remember the bicycle rides that David Harris and I did to Milan in 2002 and Gibraltar in 2003 for the then Cancerbackup, now merged with Macmillan. More on those here www.utilityspace.com/kerryrochester Anyhow, as long as I remember to turn up on the day (don't worry I'll have more than one person to remind me) I'll be there in London on April 25th! And, just like in 2002/3 I have the generous support of Martin Lynch & Sons

Can you imagine living with cancer? Definitely a thought not to dwell on, but what if it was you or a loved one? Macmillan Cancer Support would be there for you, so please will you be there for them now?

The Camb-Hams are the social side of the Cambridgeshire Repeater Group – you’ve probably read about us in RadCom.

This year marks our third annual DXpedition – and this time it is a return to the Isle of Harris (EU-010), where last year’s week-long venture brought 4,000 QSOs on all bands and modes from top band to 70cm.

This year we will be staying for two weeks and plan on launching a mini DXpedition to the Monarch Isles. We will also be taking “Flossie” along – she is the CRG’s Fiat Ducato Amateur Radio Demonstration station which is fully equipped with a 60ft Clark mast. (The CRG will be using Flossie to provide the talk-in and special event station at this year’s RSGB AGM).

Experienced IOTA DXpeditioner Martin Atherton, G3ZAY, will be joining us on the trip, as will our stalwart SOTA team. Last year they activated all the SOTA summits on Harris – this year they plan to tackle some if not all of the summits on Lewes!

As you can imagine, a trip like this generates a lot of interest, both on the bands and on the internet. Our QRZ.com page (GS3PYE) had over 10,000 views in the week we were on Harris in 2009, and our main websites – www.cambridgerepeaters.net & www.camb-hams.com - took a huge number of hits each; largely helped by our real-time online logbook, and daily diary from the island.

As always, the cost of the trip is met by those who are going, but we would dearly love some donations and sponsorship to help defray some of the costs – the diesel for Flossie alone should present quite a bill this year!

Vy 73,
Neil. G4HUN

GW/IOTA EU-124 - The Strumblehead DX and Contest Group have now sealed the final permission to activate Ramsey Island (EU-124), off the West Wales coast, from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds who own the island. They will be active from 18:00 24th July through to 14:00 27th July taking in the IOTA contest. They will be active using the club call MC0SHL for the whole duration of the operation, and using MW9W in the contest. They will be on all bands from 80M through to 10M SSB.

There is also some 30M RTTY planned by G1VDP if the other guys allow him, with participation in the last 80M Club Championships DATA section. They will be operational using generators as power. Radios used will consist of 2 K3's and a Yaesu FT1000MP MkV and amplifiers. Antennas will consist of 2 x Hexbeam, a windom and dipoles. Most of the activation is for the WAB award scheme as the square is semi rare and has not been activated for some time.

The team will be on from the farm for a few days before and after using the GB0WFF for the World Flora and Fauna award see http://www.wff44.com for award details, and using the MC0SHL club call and erecting a tower for Rob MW0RLJ. The island will not only count for the WAB award but will also count for the WFF award. A special QSL card printed for both club calls, full details are on the groups website http://www.mc0shl.com QSL via the groups manager M0URX.

A year already? If you look down the news page you will see Martin Lynch handing out the last Yaesu FT-450 in 2008!

Very pleased to announce that Tony, G8TEE was the lucky winner of this year’s Star Raffle Prize, a brand new Yaesu FT-450 worth £600. The prize was very kindly donated to all the clubs involved in running the Michael Radio Rally& Boot Fair by Yaesu & Martin Lynch & Sons.

The 12th of July McMichael Rally was the most successful to date with the car park over flowing with visitors. The weather was fantastic with brilliant sunshine and just a few spots of rain. Just as well – Martin & Chris didn’t have any wet weather protection for their stand!

Next year’s event will be even bigger and better with lots of new attractions and more stands. Date to be announced.

Katherine Kelly who plays Becky Grainger in Coronation Street opened a new Co-Op store just across the road from ML&S.

Several members of the ML&S team hot footed it over to the opening and the photo shows Kelvin Wade from ML&S Despatch with a big grin on his face after Katherine kindly autographed one of Lynch’s new “I’ve been Lynched” T-Shirts. She apparently declined to pose for a wet T-shirt shot. (No idea why).

The T-shirt will be one of the raffle prizes donated by Martin for the fourth coming RSGB Ham Fest in October.
