The Yaesu ATAS-120 Active Tuning Antenna System provides HF/VHF/UHF coverage with automatic motorized tuning. It is the successor to the popular ATAS-100. Utilizing control signals from the transceivers microprocessor received via the coaxial cable, the ATAS-120's internal motor adjusts the radiator length for best SWR. The ATAS-120 covers the 7, 14, 21, 28, 50, 144 and 430 MHz amateur bands and is compatible with the FT-100, FT-847, FT-857, FT-897 and FT-991A.
If you are living in an apartment, townhouse or other location where you do not have space to install an antenna you might consider the ATAS-120 along with the optional ATBK-100 Antenna Base kit. This VHF/UHF counterpoise kit will get you on the air fast.

Better than you might think ...

Firstly this is never going to be a replacement for a decent long wire, dipole or beam!
Using the ML&S mount i bolted it to the rollcage of my land rover and drove NYC to SFO. A trim of 4200miles both on and off road. The antenna was grounded using a 1/2 inch thick battery -ve strap and tuned up with no issues at all.
40M was very active and I was easily able to contact a wide variety of states.
Back in the UK i live in a ground floor flat. I bolted the antenna mount to the side of the radiator and have being doing a bit of JT65 stuff ... I've put signals into the US and SouthAfrica on 20/40M.
All in all it works, i can't have any external antennas and this gets me on the air.
