Comparison Yaesu FT891 v FT857
I have just traded my FT857, which I bought from ML&S in around 2009, for the FT891. Both radios were purchased specifically for mobile use with the ATAS 120A antenna. Whilst my FT857 was fitted with the Collins mechanical filter option, it is very clear that receiver capabilities have moved on immensely over the years. The receiver in the FT891 is light-years ahead of the FT857; the filtering (NB etc) in the radio COMPLETELY ERADICATES any electrical noise from the vehicle and incoming SSB signals are audible to a level way below the capability of the FT857. - even given the possibility of a lazy meter, signals are easily audible to below S1. Received reports on the transmission capability of the radio indicate a very bright audio with no distortion - described as "great audio for DX'ing" and in the two weeks it has been back in my car, I have worked all 5 continents on 20m despite the poor state of the bands. The FT891 is a SERIOUSLY CAPABLE rig for mobile operation and the backlit LCD display is massively easier to interpret than the older/smaller display on the FT857. It operates the ATAS 120A perfectly, tuning all bands first time (I've got a really good earth on the hatchback mount no!!!w!) I absolutely LOVE this radio
what a superb piece of kit this radio is!! I wanted an HF mobile rig with backlit keys and good display for my tired eyes, it fulfills all of these things !! don't forget to read the manual though!!
