The CHAMELEON MPAS 2.0 Micro (100w SSB and 25w CW) + Sling Backpack (Modular Portable Antenna System)

The antenna is a highly versatile, robust, and portable HF antenna solution engineered for a wide range of applications, from tactical field operations to emergency communications, and outdoor amateur radio activities.

Designed to deliver reliable performance in various terrains and configurations, the CHA MPAS 2.0 offers exceptional adaptability for users requiring both ease of transport and setup. Its modular design allows users to adjust the antenna setup based on their communication requirements, providing broad HF frequency coverage and optimised performance in both rural and urban environments.

Product Overview

The CHA MPAS 2.0 is built on a modular "LEGO® BLOCK" system, allowing users to reconfigure it for different HF communications tasks. Its rugged construction and high-performance capabilities make it a valuable tool for government and military operations, NGOs, emergency preparedness, survival communications, and outdoor recreation. The antenna system is both omnidirectional and unidirectional, supporting ground-wave, skywave, and NVIS (Near Vertical Incidence Skywave) propagation, and is particularly effective in regions lacking established communication infrastructure.

Core Components

The  CHAMELEON MPAS 2.0 Micro includes carefully designed and durable components to ensure operational success in various settings:

  1. CHA HYBRID-MICRO: This is the heart of the system, enabling broadband matching across frequencies from 1.8 MHz to 54 MHz. The HYBRID-MICRO is optimized for 100W SSB phone and 25W for high-duty digital modes.
  2. CHA MIL WHIP 2.0: A durable, 113” military-style collapsible whip antenna that provides effective performance in vertical configurations. Built to withstand field conditions, it collapses compactly for transport and is ideal for use in both short- and medium-range setups.
  3. CHA MIL EXT 2.0: An 8'9" (105.5") extension for the MIL WHIP, increasing the overall height and enhancing efficiency for lower HF bands. Together, the MIL WHIP and EXT form an extended vertical configuration that boosts performance for lower-frequency communication.
  4. 73-Foot Antenna Wire: Made of tinned copper KEVLAR PTFE, this 73-foot length of durable, high-temperature-resistant wire supports various configurations, including NVIS and inverted L setups. The wire includes isolation rings and connectors for flexible deployment.
  5. 25-Foot Counterpoise Wire: Also made of tinned copper KEVLAR PTFE, this wire enhances performance by providing a ground plane, essential for configurations that require an effective radial system for impedance matching.
  6. CHA SPIKE Mount: A sturdy stainless steel ground spike mount with 3/8”-24 threading to secure the antenna for vertical setups, providing a stable base in diverse terrains and easy field installation.
  7. 50 Feet of Coaxial Cable with RFI Choke: Designed to reduce radio frequency interference, this coaxial cable ensures signal clarity and is terminated with UHF connectors. The RFI choke minimizes unwanted interference, crucial in environments with high RFI.
  8. Military-Style Bag: For easy transport and organisation, components fit neatly into this weather-resistant bag, making the CHA MPAS 2.0 ideal for rapid deployment and transport.

Configuration Versatility

The CHA MPAS 2.0 offers multiple configurations tailored to meet specific communication needs:

  • Manpack Vertical: Lightweight, portable, and easy to deploy for short-range HF/VHF-LO ground wave communication, making it perfect for mobile field operations.
  • Portable Vertical: Extended range for medium-distance communication, utilizing the MIL WHIP and MIL EXT for both ground wave and skywave propagation, ideal for omnidirectional coverage.
  • Horizontal NVIS: Optimized for NVIS propagation, providing dependable short-to-medium range communication by bouncing signals off the ionosphere, especially valuable in mountainous or forested areas.
  • Sloping Wire: A general-purpose configuration that supports ground and skywave propagation, with a slight unidirectional focus, useful for quick deployment and versatile coverage.
  • End-Fed Inverted L: Excellent for short- to medium-range communication with ground and skywave propagation, enhancing signal in one direction for reliable regional coverage.
  • End-Fed Inverted V: Provides broad coverage over medium to long distances, ideal for HF skywave propagation, particularly suited to rural and open spaces.
