The Hustler 6-BTV is one of the most popular HF vertical antennas available, offering reliable multi-band performance from a compact, ground-mounted installation. Covering 80, 40, 30, 20, 15 and 10 metres, it is an excellent choice for operators who want a proven HF vertical for a small garden, limited space station or general DX work.

With power handling up to 1kW and a 50 ohm feed point, the 6-BTV can be fed with any length of good quality 50 ohm coax. It uses solid 25.4mm / 1 inch fibreglass trap formers, heavy-duty aluminium construction and a strong mounting bracket for long-term outdoor use.

On 10-40m, the 6-BTV is designed to achieve a VSWR of 1.6:1 or better when correctly installed and adjusted. On 80m, it provides a usable bandwidth of up to around 100kHz, making it ideal for operators who want a compact way to get onto the lower HF bands without installing a full-size wire antenna.

Like all quarter wave vertical antennas, the 6-BTV needs an earth or radial system to work against. It can be ground mounted with or without radials, although performance will improve with a good radial field. It can also be used on an elevated mount when fitted with suitable radials.

Installation Notes

All quarter wave vertical antennas require an earth or radial system to work against. Think of the radial system as the other half of the antenna.

The most common installation method is to mount the antenna at ground level and lay out radial wires from the base. Radials do not have to be a quarter wave long; in most installations, more wire on the ground is better than fewer “perfect length” radials. The radial wire can be insulated or bare, and is often hidden by slitting the ground and burying it just below the surface.

If installing radials is not possible, earth rods may be used, although efficiency will usually be reduced compared with a proper radial system.

For best results, we also recommend fitting a coax choke at the feed point of the antenna. A simple choke can be made by winding around 10-15 turns of coax on a 4 inch former, securing the turns with cable ties or tape, and then removing the former so the coil remains air wound.

Digital Mode Power Note

The digital mode rating is based on typical FT8 operating cycles of approximately 13 seconds transmit followed by 17 seconds receive, for a maximum duration of 5 minutes on and 5 minutes off. This allows the traps time to cool between operating periods.

Important Note

Performance will depend heavily on installation, mounting position, ground conditions and radial system. For best efficiency, use as much radial wire as practical and ensure all connections are weatherproofed.
