The Kenwood TM-D750E is a powerful 144/430 MHz dual-band mobile transceiver for analog FM and digital D-STAR operation. Its two-piece design consists of a compact main unit and a detachable control panel with an integrated speaker. Three transmit power levels of 50, 10 or 5 watts are available on 144–146 MHz and 430–440 MHz. Band A covers 108–174 MHz and 410–470 MHz for reception, while Band B offers a particularly wide receive range from 108–524 MHz. Full-duplex operation between VHF and UHF as well as simultaneous reception on both bands further expand the possibilities during everyday operation.

The central operating element is the 3.45-inch TFT color display with 320 × 240 pixels and adjustable brightness. In addition to frequencies and operating information, it can also present extensive APRS and positioning data graphically. Visual Scan not only shows currently received signal levels but can also display their history as a colorful waterfall. The control panel also features an integrated 3 W speaker. A DSP-based 5-band receive equalizer and 4-band transmit equalizer are available for tailoring the audio characteristics.

For APRS, the TM-D750E integrates a wide range of functions directly into the transceiver. Position data, text messages and additional information can be exchanged in real time. Up to 100 received stations, weather stations and objects can be stored, filtered and sorted. The display can show information such as distance, direction, heading and speed of other stations as well as received weather data. Features including Smart Beaconing, Decay Algorithm, Proportional Pathing, APRS Voice and QSY based on frequency or repeater information contained in a beacon support versatile APRS operation. The integrated KISS TNC also enables 1200/9600 bps packet communication via USB or Bluetooth. The TM-D750E can be used as a standalone APRS digipeater or, together with a PC, for IGate applications.

D-STAR is also comprehensively integrated. In addition to simplex and repeater operation, the TM-D750E supports gateway and reflector communication as well as DR mode with preprogrammed repeater lists. One particularly notable feature is the simultaneous reception of two digital voice channels. This makes it possible, for example, to monitor two D-STAR repeaters at the same time. Alternatively, Band A can be used to access a remote repeater or reflector via the Internet while Band B simultaneously monitors a local D-STAR repeater. The D-STAR Repeater Monitor also allows ongoing traffic on remote D-STAR repeaters to be monitored audibly via the Internet.

The integrated dual-band Wi-Fi for 2.4 and 5 GHz enables D-STAR Direct Mode. This allows the TM-D750E to access D-STAR repeaters and reflectors directly via an Internet connection without requiring a nearby repeater or separate hotspot device. Reflector Terminal Mode and Repeater Terminal Mode are also available. In these modes, a Windows PC or Android device running compatible third-party software can be connected via USB or Bluetooth.

An integrated GNSS module with patch antenna supports GPS, Galileo, QZSS and SBAS and provides positioning data for APRS and D-STAR. GPS logging and automatic time correction are also built in. For local storage, microSD/SDHC card slots are provided on both the main unit and the control panel. These can be used, among other things, for voice recordings and communication logs. USB-C connectors are also available on both units. Bluetooth 5.0 with HSP and SPP supports compatible wireless headsets and data connections.

The TM-D750E provides 1000 memory channels, storage for up to 1500 repeaters and 30 hotspots, as well as four voice-message memories. Extensive voice guidance with more than 900 prompts, four selectable speech speeds and phonetic callsign reading further supports operation. The free MCP-D750 Windows software allows convenient management of memory channels and numerous device settings from a PC.

The two-piece design of the Kenwood TM-D750E provides considerably more installation flexibility in a vehicle than a conventional mobile transceiver housed in a single chassis. The main unit can, for example, be mounted under a seat or in another suitable location, while only the comparatively slim control panel needs to be positioned at the operating position. Since the display, controls and a 3 W speaker are already integrated into the panel, all essential functions remain directly accessible. Separate volume and squelch controls for Bands A and B also make dual-band operation more convenient.

In everyday operation, the TM-D750E shows its strengths especially when several communication paths need to be monitored at the same time. Two frequencies can be received simultaneously, and even two D-STAR voice channels can be monitored in parallel. This means that, for example, a local D-STAR repeater can be monitored on one band while a second repeater or a reflector via Direct Mode is used on the other. Full-duplex operation between VHF and UHF is also supported.

For mobile APRS applications, the TM-D750E combines transceiver, GNSS receiver and TNC in a single unit. Its own position can be transmitted, while nearby stations can be evaluated directly on the color display. Distance and direction to other stations are immediately visible, as are received weather data. Frequency or repeater information transmitted within an APRS beacon can be transferred directly to voice operation using the QSY function. This makes APRS an actively usable part of everyday radio operation rather than merely a background positioning feature.

With its standalone digipeater function, the TM-D750E can also relay APRS packets independently. This is not only useful for permanent installations: when temporarily placed at a favorable location, the radio can help extend APRS coverage into areas with weak signals. Together with a PC, it can also be used for IGate applications. The integrated KISS TNC provides access via USB or Bluetooth.

For D-STAR operation beyond the range of a suitable repeater, the integrated Wi-Fi opens up additional possibilities. If Internet access is available, Direct Mode can connect directly to D-STAR repeaters and reflectors without an external hotspot. This makes the radio suitable for use not only in the shack but also in motorhomes or temporary operating locations where Internet access is available but no suitable D-STAR repeater can be reached. Alternatively, the terminal modes provide access via a connected Windows PC or Android device.

The bright color display supports practical operation with graphical station and position views as well as Visual Scan and waterfall presentation. Voice recording, GPS logging, extensive memory functions and voice guidance further enhance the TM-D750E for longer mobile or stationary operating sessions. In this way, Kenwood combines conventional VHF/UHF radio operation with APRS, D-STAR and IP-based networking in a single unit without requiring a collection of additional modules for its core functions.
