THE FTDX101 HERITAGE

Flagship engineering for serious HF operation

Continuing the heritage of Yaesu's celebrated FT-101 series, the FTDX101D was developed around one of the most demanding aspects of amateur radio: hearing a weak signal while much stronger stations are operating close by.

Its Hybrid SDR architecture combines a high-performance narrow-band receiving system with direct-sampling SDR technology for spectrum visualisation. The result is a sophisticated HF/50MHz transceiver designed for demanding DX work, contesting and everyday operation.

The FTDX101D shares much of its fundamental receiver technology with the 200W FTDX101MP. The D version provides 100W output, requires a separate 13.8V DC power supply and features factory-fitted VC-Tune on the MAIN receiver, with optional VC-Tune available for the SUB receiver.

INDEPENDENT RECEIVER TESTING

Recognised by Sherwood Engineering

The FTDX101D has achieved a leading position in Sherwood Engineering's widely referenced amateur-radio receiver test data. Its impressive close-in dynamic range makes it particularly attractive to operators who regularly work weak signals on crowded bands.

Sherwood's rankings reflect specific measurements and configurations. Results and positions can change as additional equipment is tested.

RECEIVER ARCHITECTURE

The advantage of Hybrid SDR

The FTDX101D combines two complementary signal-processing systems. A narrow-band SDR receiver delivers demanding signal reception, while a separate direct-sampling SDR system provides detailed, real-time visibility of band activity.

Narrow-Band SDR

A high-performance down-conversion receiver uses crystal roofing filters, low-noise RF circuitry and high-resolution digital signal processing. Strong signals outside the desired receive bandwidth can be attenuated before reaching the analogue-to-digital converter, helping preserve receiver performance in demanding conditions.

Direct-Sampling SDR

A complementary direct-sampling receiver supports the real-time spectrum scope. This gives the operator a detailed visual representation of nearby activity, making it easier to locate stations and identify operating opportunities.

This combination is particularly valuable during contests, DX pile-ups and operation near powerful transmitters, where both strong-signal handling and spectrum awareness are essential.

RECEIVER PERFORMANCE

Outstanding close-in signal handling

Yaesu designed the FTDX101 series for exceptional performance with closely spaced signals. Its 400MHz High Resolution Direct Digital Synthesizer (HRDDS), low-noise oscillator architecture and high-performance RF filtering contribute to excellent strong-signal characteristics.

110dB+
3rd IMDR

Third-order Intermodulation Dynamic Range at 2kHz spacing.

Manufacturer-published performance figures under Yaesu's specified test conditions. Actual receiver performance depends on configuration, operating frequency and measurement conditions.

RF PRESELECTION

VC-Tune. Greater control over interference.

The FTDX101D includes Yaesu's motor-driven VC-Tune RF preselector on its MAIN receiver. This system is designed to improve reception in the presence of strong nearby signals by providing adjustable RF preselection ahead of subsequent receiver stages.

VC-Tune employs a variable capacitor driven by a precision stepping motor. Its resonant frequency can be adjusted to help reject strong interfering signals while maintaining reception of the desired signal. Yaesu specifies maximum attenuation of approximately 70dB under its measurement conditions.

The system is controlled using the front-panel VC-TUNE key and Multi-Purpose VFO Outer Dial. Tuning settings can be retained by band, reducing the need to repeat adjustments when returning to familiar operating conditions.

Optional SUB receiver VC-Tune

The MAIN receiver VC-Tune is factory-fitted. A separate VCT-101 unit can be installed to add VC-Tune functionality to the SUB receiver. The 200W FTDX101MP includes both units as standard.

Crystal roofing filters for demanding reception

The FTDX101D incorporates narrow crystal roofing filters as part of its receiver's front-end selectivity system. These filters attenuate unwanted signals before digital processing, helping the receiver maintain performance when strong adjacent signals are present.

Roofing Filter MAIN Receiver SUB Receiver
300Hz CW Optional Optional
600Hz CW Standard Standard
3.0kHz SSB Standard Standard
12kHz AM Standard Standard
1.2kHz SSB Optional Optional

Optional narrow roofing filters are separately purchased internal accessories and may require specialist installation.

DISPLAY AND VISUALISATION

See the band in remarkable detail

The 7-inch, 800 x 480 pixel colour touchscreen offers a detailed operating display while retaining extensive dedicated front-panel controls. Spectrum and waterfall information gives the operator an immediate visual representation of signals across the selected frequency span.

3DSS Spectrum Stream

Yaesu's three-dimensional spectrum visualisation provides an alternative way to observe signal strength and changes in band activity over time.

Real-Time Spectrum Scope

The direct-sampling SDR system produces a live view of nearby signals, supporting rapid identification of operating opportunities.

Dual-Receiver Displays

Configurable display arrangements support MAIN and SUB receiver operation, including dual-band spectrum monitoring.

Purpose-built front-panel controls

The FTDX101D balances modern touchscreen operation with a traditional high-grade radio control layout. Important functions remain accessible directly from the front panel, allowing the operator to make adjustments without navigating multiple menus.

MPVD Outer Dial

The aluminium Multi-Purpose VFO Outer Dial provides adjustment of functions including SUB VFO tuning, VC-Tune, clarifier and user-selectable controls.

Active Band Indicator

Illuminated band-selection controls identify MAIN and SUB receiver assignments and the transmitting VFO at a glance.

Receiver Adjustments

Quick access to WIDTH, SHIFT and RF preselection supports precise tuning in changing band conditions.

Split and Dual Watch

Independent receiver controls make it practical to monitor separate frequencies and manage split-frequency contacts.

TRANSMITTER ENGINEERING

100W transmission with exceptional signal purity

The FTDX101D delivers up to 100W RF output on supported HF and 50MHz modes. Its transmitter design places considerable emphasis on low phase noise and maintaining signal quality throughout the transmit chain.

Yaesu's 400MHz HRDDS oscillator architecture supports both receiver and transmitter performance. High-resolution digital signal-generation circuitry, carefully designed conversion stages and a precision RF amplifier help maintain a clean transmitted signal, particularly important on crowded amateur bands.

STATION POWER

Standard 13.8V DC station power

Unlike the FTDX101MP, which includes the FPS-101 external mains power supply, the FTDX101D requires a suitable regulated 13.8V DC power supply. The radio draws approximately 23A at maximum 100W transmit output.

Power supply not included

Use a quality regulated 13.8V DC supply with sufficient continuous-current capacity for the transceiver's transmitting requirements. Allow adequate ventilation around the radio and follow Yaesu's power-connection instructions.

Remote operation and station integration

The FTDX101 series supports computer-based remote control, allowing compatible software to manage operating functions and monitor receiver information. Remote operation over a LAN or internet connection requires the appropriate optional external LAN equipment and software configuration. This equipment is not included as standard with the FTDX101D.
