From the shack to the field in minutes
The FTX-1 Optima is built around Yaesu's detachable FTX-1 Field Head and SPA-1 RF power amplifier. Connect the Field Head to the SPA-1 for full-power base-station use, or detach it and fit the included SBR-52LI battery for a compact standalone field station.
This modular arrangement allows the same radio to support serious home-station operation, portable activity, contesting, DX, SOTA, POTA and everyday VHF/UHF communications without needing two separate transceivers.
Three operating configurations
Optima Base Station
Attach the Field Head to the SPA-1 amplifier for up to 100W on HF/50MHz and 50W on 70/144/430MHz with a suitable external 13.8V DC power supply and supported UK band configuration.
Battery Field Operation
Detach the Field Head and fit the included 6,400mAh SBR-52LI lithium-ion battery for up to 6W standalone operation on supported bands.
External DC Field Operation
Power the detached Field Head from a suitable 13.8V DC supply for up to 10W on supported bands, with lower power on 70MHz as specified for the UK configuration.
Full-power operation with an integrated antenna tuner
The supplied SPA-1 converts the compact Field Head into a fully featured desktop transceiver. Alongside the RF power amplifier, it incorporates an HF/50MHz automatic antenna tuner, dedicated antenna connections and an additional audio speaker.
Integrated HF/50MHz ATU
Automatic matching for suitable HF/50MHz antennas within the specified tuner impedance range.
Three Antenna Connections
Two antenna connectors for HF/50MHz and a separate connector for VHF/UHF operation.
Quick Detachment
The Field Head attaches to the SPA-1 without tools and can be removed for portable operation.
The internal ATU belongs to the SPA-1 amplifier. When using the detached Field Head, optional portable tuners such as the FC-80 or FC-90 may be required for antennas needing matching. The FC-80 cannot be installed in the assembled Optima configuration.
Modern receiving performance from HF through UHF
The FTX-1 series uses high-resolution analogue-to-digital conversion and FPGA-based signal processing, drawing on technology developed for Yaesu's FTDX10. Its receiving architecture combines direct-sampling techniques for frequencies below 48MHz with IF-sampling conversion above 48MHz.
Carefully designed RF band-pass filtering, a low-noise front end and a high-quality 110.592MHz sampling clock help preserve signal quality. A high-speed 32-bit DSP offers flexible processing for reducing unwanted signals and improving intelligibility.
IF SHIFT and WIDTH
Adjust the receive passband to reduce interference from nearby signals.
NOTCH and CONTOUR
Target interfering carriers and shape the received audio response.
DNR and Noise Blanker
Digital noise reduction and impulse-noise control improve listening comfort.
CW Audio Peak Filter
APF processing helps emphasise CW signals during narrow-band reception.
Listen to two bands simultaneously
True dual-band reception makes the FTX-1 especially versatile for operators who need to monitor activity on different frequencies and bands. Supported combinations include HF/VHF, HF/UHF, VHF/UHF, VHF/VHF and UHF/UHF, including simultaneous C4FM/C4FM reception.
HF/V, HF/U, V/U, U/V, V/V and U/U. Simultaneous HF/HF reception is not supported.
The dual-receiver capability is complemented by Yaesu's MAG, PMG and QMB functions for organising memory channels and quickly recalling useful operating settings.
4.3-inch touchscreen with 3DSS
A high-resolution 4.3-inch colour touchscreen provides operating information, spectrum visualisation and quick access to key settings. Yaesu's 3DSS (3-Dimensional Spectrum Stream) display makes it easier to follow changing band activity and identify signals.
3D Spectrum Scope
Visualise nearby signals and changes in spectrum activity over time.
Memory Channel Scope
Display the receive status of up to 43 stored channels using a bar-graph view.
Dedicated Controls
MAIN VFO, FUNC dial and LED indicators provide direct operating feedback.
C4FM, FT8, APRS and intelligent memory functions
C4FM and AMS
C4FM digital voice and automatic selection between compatible FM and digital signals.
FT8 Preset
Preset functionality to simplify configuration for popular computer-based digital modes.
MAG and QMB
Automatic memory grouping and quick recall of up to ten operating configurations.
PMG and APRS
Priority monitoring of selected VHF/UHF memories and supported 1200/9600bps APRS data functions.
Engineered for home and portable use
The Field Head measures just 213 x 89 x 55mm and weighs approximately 1.25kg. Its compact die-cast chassis incorporates heat-dissipation features, dual front-facing speakers and a practical control layout.
With the SPA-1 attached, the complete Optima measures approximately 213 x 89 x 240mm and weighs around 3.9kg. This arrangement provides a substantial desktop radio without requiring the physical space of a conventional full-size base station.
The included 6,400mAh battery supports standalone operation. Yaesu quotes up to approximately nine hours on HF SSB and eight hours on VHF/UHF FM under its specified 6-6-48 duty-cycle conditions. The SCF-1 is intended for externally powered Field Head operation where additional cooling is useful, and replaces the battery on the rear mounting position.
Connect to a wide range of antennas
The FTX-1 Optima supports Yaesu's ATAS-120A automatic active tuning antenna, ATAS-25 manually tuned portable antenna and FC-40 external automatic tuner when configured with the appropriate supported connections.
When using the SPA-1, its integrated HF/50MHz ATU handles compatible antenna matching. For portable operation with the detached Field Head, antenna matching arrangements depend on the antenna and optional tuner selected.

Additional ML&S Promotional Equipment
SCF-1: Rear-mounted cooling fan for externally powered Field Head operation.
SPG-1: Field Head protection guard.
Both supplied free under the current ML&S promotion while stocks last. These are not standard Yaesu factory package contents.
Installation and Compatibility Notes
External power: Use a suitable regulated 13.8V DC supply with continuous-current capacity appropriate for 100W operation.
SCF-1 cooling fan: Fits the rear of the detached Field Head, replacing the SBR-52LI battery in that mounting position.
UK 70MHz: Operation depends on the destination configuration. Do not assume 100W output on 70MHz; the UK Optima configuration provides lower power.
Portable ATUs: The FC-80 and FC-90 are optional Field Head accessories. The SPA-1 provides its own HF/50MHz tuner.
Battery charging: Follow Yaesu's specified USB-C PD charging requirements and avoid assuming all USB-C chargers are suitable.
