Messi & Paoloni Airborne 5 is a lightweight 5mm 50 ohm coaxial cable designed to provide significantly better RF performance than conventional RG-58 while retaining a similarly compact outside diameter.

It uses a 99.9% pure bare copper centre conductor, physically foamed polyethylene dielectric, 100% screening foil and an aluminium-magnesium reactive braid. This construction gives Airborne 5 an 85% velocity factor and screening efficiency of greater than 105dB between 100MHz and 2000MHz.

A tough UV-resistant polyethylene outer jacket makes Airborne 5 particularly useful for permanent outdoor installations and direct burial, while its remarkably low weight of approximately 2.3kg per 100 metres also makes it attractive for portable stations and DXpedition use.

Only 5mm Diameter

Compact dimensions similar to RG-58, but with substantially improved loss performance.

85% Velocity Factor

Physically foamed polyethylene dielectric helps reduce attenuation compared with conventional solid-dielectric RG-58.

Outdoor and Direct Burial

UV-resistant polyethylene jacket is designed for weather exposure and underground installation.

Only 2.3kg per 100m

Exceptionally lightweight construction is useful for portable stations and installations where cable weight matters.

Why Choose Airborne 5?

Airborne 5 is intended for operators who want the convenient size of RG-58 without accepting the same level of cable loss.

At 50MHz, M&P specifies Airborne 5 as having approximately 3.6dB less loss per 100 metres than RG-58 C/U. It also weighs around 1.4kg less per 100 metres, making it particularly useful for portable and lightweight installations.

The polyethylene jacket provides excellent resistance to outdoor exposure, while the aluminium-magnesium braid gives the cable a strong but lightweight outer conductor.

Where Airborne 5 Works Best

Outdoor Feed Lines

Weather-resistant polyethylene jacket makes Airborne 5 a strong choice for permanent external cable runs.

Direct Burial

Designed by M&P for underground installation where routing the coax through conduit is impractical.

Portable and DXpedition Use

Very low cable weight helps reduce the amount of equipment that needs to be transported.

M&P Cable Length Guidance

M&P provides the following transmitting guidance for Airborne 5. These figures are recommendations for selecting an appropriate cable size rather than absolute operating limits.

Frequency Excellent Good Guidance
14MHz Up to 25m Up to 40m Consider larger coax above 40m
28MHz Up to 15m Up to 35m Consider larger coax above 35m
50MHz Up to 12m Up to 28m Consider larger coax above 30m
144MHz Up to 8m Up to 15m Consider larger coax above 15m
430MHz - Up to 3m Consider larger coax above 3m
1296MHz - - M&P recommends 10.3mm or 12.7mm coax

Cable Construction

  • 99.9% pure bare copper inner conductor
  • 1.13mm centre conductor diameter
  • Triple-layer physically foamed polyethylene dielectric
  • 100% aluminium-polyester-aluminium foil screen
  • 84% coverage aluminium-magnesium reactive braid
  • 96 braid wires
  • UV-resistant polyethylene outer jacket
  • Suitable for outdoor use and direct burial
  • 5mm overall cable diameter
Important Connector Information

Airborne 5 uses an aluminium-magnesium braid which must not be soldered. M&P recommends using connectors specifically designed for this cable so that the braid is secured mechanically rather than soldered.
