Portable Linked HF Dipole

Chameleon Antenna CHA-LD-3

Portable 40 / 30 / 20m linked dipole offering three resonant HF bands from one lightweight field antenna, with colour-coded links for straightforward band selection.

One Compact Antenna. Three Resonant Bands.

Change between 40, 30 and 20 metres by opening or closing the colour-coded wire links instead of carrying three separate dipoles.

The CHA LD-3 is designed for operators who want the predictable behaviour of a resonant dipole without carrying a separate antenna for each band.

Its two linked wire legs, compact 1:1 balun, line winders and carry pouch form a complete portable radiator for POTA, SOTA, QRP, travel, preparedness and temporary field stations.

Deploy it as an inverted V from a single centre support or as a horizontal dipole between three supports. Select the required band using the colour-coded links, raise the antenna into its final geometry and verify resonance with an antenna analyser before transmitting.

BANDS
40 / 30 / 20m

Three resonant amateur bands from one linked wire antenna.

BAND CHANGE
Colour-Coded Links

Open or close the matching wire links on both antenna legs to select the required band.

DEPLOYMENT
Inverted V or Horizontal

Suitable for single-centre-support inverted V setups or conventional horizontal dipole installations.

POWER
50W SSB

Rated to 50W maximum on SSB and 25W maximum on CW and other modes.

Typical Field Setup

A Typical Inverted V Needs One 20ft Centre Support

Raise the CHA LD-3 balun at the centre and slope the two wire legs down towards safe lower tie points, keeping both sides reasonably symmetrical.

The guide's reference inverted-V installation uses a site approximately 60ft across with the centre around 20ft high.

Approximately 70ft of paracord is used in the guide reference installation. Paracord and support structures are not included.

Band Selection

Change Bands Without Guessing

20 METRES
Blue Section

Open both wire links so only the inner blue-marked section remains electrically active on each side.

30 METRES
Orange Section

Connect the inner link on each side and leave the outer link open.

40 METRES
Yellow Section

Connect both links on both sides so that the full wire length is electrically active.

Before Transmitting

Lower the antenna before changing bands. Both wire legs must use the same link configuration. Raise the antenna into its final operating geometry and verify resonance with an antenna analyser before transmitting.

Resonant Operation

Designed to Operate Without an External Tuner

With the correct link state selected and the antenna deployed as described in the guide, an external antenna tuner is normally unnecessary.

The guide specifies a typical SWR of less than 2.2:1 in its defined band setup. Final resonance will depend on installation height, geometry, surroundings and ground conditions, so the completed installation should always be checked with an antenna analyser.

OPERATOR SUPPLIES
Required for Deployment
  • Suitable centre and end supports
  • Paracord or suitable support line
  • Compatible 50-ohm feed line
  • Antenna analyser for final verification
Documented Feed-Line Option

CHA RG-316

Chameleon's documentation identifies its 25ft CHA RG-316 feed line with integrated feed-point RFI choke as a compatible feed-line option for the LD-3.

Documented Expansion

Build on Equipment You Already Own

CHA LEFS 4010
Use the LD-3 Wire Pair

The LD-3 guide documents connecting the linked wire pair to the CHA LEFS 4010 dipole centre assembly. The LEFS documentation controls that complete configuration.

Compatibility Note

A connector or attachment that physically fits is not proof of an approved antenna configuration. Use only complete configurations documented for the CHA LD-3 and its compatible Chameleon Antenna accessories.
