Call 0345 2300 599The Chameleon CHA M-COIL is a rugged inductive loading coil designed to lower the resonant frequency of compatible Chameleon vertical whip antennas, providing an effective way to extend portable antenna operation onto the lower HF bands.
Designed primarily for use with the CHA SS17 telescopic whip, the M-COIL allows a compact vertical antenna system to operate effectively on lower frequencies including the 30 and 40 metre bands.
Extend Your Vertical onto the Lower HF Bands
A physically short vertical antenna normally becomes increasingly difficult to use efficiently as the operating frequency is lowered.
The CHA M-COIL introduces inductive loading into the antenna system, electrically lengthening the radiator and allowing resonance to be achieved at substantially lower frequencies without requiring a full size quarter wave vertical.
This makes it particularly useful where portability, deployment time or available antenna height are important considerations.
Using the CHA M-COIL with the CHA SS17
When used with the 17 ft CHA SS17 telescopic whip, the M-COIL provides an excellent portable solution for lower band operation.
For 40 metre operation, the SS17 can be extended to approximately 16 ft when used with the M-COIL.
For 30 metre operation, the whip can be shortened to approximately 7 ft 5 in.
These measurements should be treated as starting points. The final resonant frequency will depend on the radial arrangement, ground conditions, nearby objects and the surrounding environment.
For best results, the antenna should always be checked and adjusted using an antenna analyser or SWR meter before transmitting.
The CHA SS17 can also be used without the M-COIL for operation across higher HF bands.
Power Handling
The CHA M-COIL is rated for:
- 200W SSB
- 100W CW
Always observe the lowest power rating of any component within the complete antenna system.
High duty cycle operation may require additional consideration, particularly during prolonged transmissions or in high ambient temperatures.
Radials and Counterpoise
As with any loaded vertical antenna, the ground or counterpoise system plays an important part in overall performance.
Using a suitable radial system can improve antenna efficiency and help produce a more predictable resonant point.
Changes in radial length, soil conditions, nearby objects and installation position can all affect antenna tuning.
For best results, assemble the complete antenna in its intended operating position and check resonance before transmitting.
Ideal for Portable Operation
The CHA M-COIL is a simple way to increase the lower band capability of the CHA SS17 without carrying a significantly larger antenna.
Its robust construction, straightforward installation and 200W SSB power handling make it particularly well suited to portable HF stations, field operations and temporary antenna installations.
