EXCLUSIVE TO MARTIN LYNCH AND SONS
Overview
This is a self-contained VHF APRS device designed to operate as a digipeater, receiver, or transmitter, enabling reliable packet delivery to the APRS network without the need for an external radio or computer. It also supports operation as a satellite APRS gateway.
Operating Modes
1. Digipeater
In digipeater mode, the device receives APRS packets and retransmits them, extending their range and helping reach other stations that might otherwise be out of coverage.
2. Receiver
As a receiver, it monitors APRS traffic on local VHF frequencies and can display, log, or process packets for tracking, situational awareness, or data analysis.
3. Transmitter
When configured as a transmitter, the device sends APRS packets to the network, such as position reports, weather data, telemetry, or short messages.
The Goal
APRS beacons are transmitted continuously by vehicles, aircraft, high-altitude balloons, and even the International Space Station. However, for these beacons to appear on the Internet, they must be received by an iGate or digipeater. Traditionally, this requires a dedicated VHF radio connected to a computer running decoding software.
This is where iGateMini comes in.
The iGateMini integrates the VHF receiver, decoding software, and computer into a single compact unit. No external radio or PC is required.
Why It Matters
Consider a driver beaconing their position during a long road trip. In areas with sparse APRS infrastructure, many of those beacons are never received and are simply lost. These coverage gaps—often referred to as dead zones—result in incomplete tracking data.
By placing iGateMinis in ham shacks across wide geographic areas, APRS coverage can be significantly expanded, helping to capture beacons that would otherwise go unheard.
APRS Background
-
APRS Overview
APRS uses amateur radio frequencies to transmit data such as position, speed, altitude, weather, and messages from GPS-enabled radios or trackers to nearby receivers.
These receivers forward the data to APRS-IS, making it accessible worldwide via the Internet. -
Dead Zones
In rural or underserved regions, a lack of receivers and iGates can prevent APRS packets from reaching the network, creating gaps in tracking and situational awareness.
The Role of iGateMini
-
Compact and affordable APRS receiver/iGate
-
Connects directly to the Internet using a home Wi-Fi network
-
Receives local APRS packets over VHF and forwards them to APRS-IS
-
Simple to deploy, making it practical for widespread adoption by amateur radio operators
Because iGateMinis are inexpensive and easy to set up, they can be widely deployed, creating a much denser and more effective APRS receive network.
Benefits
-
Enhanced Coverage
More receivers mean fewer dead zones and a higher likelihood that APRS packets reach the Internet. -
Improved Redundancy
A distributed network increases reliability—if one iGate goes offline, others nearby can continue forwarding packets. -
Community Impact
Encouraging hams to participate strengthens the APRS ecosystem, benefiting road travel tracking, public events, emergency communications, search and rescue, and disaster response.
*****PLEASE NOTE DO NOT OVERPOWER THE UNIT (USB POWER ONLY), ALSO DO NOT TX WITHOUT AN ANTENNA CONNECTED AS IT WILL BREAK AND THIS IS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRENTY****
