A compact, lightweight 40-10m End Fed Half Wave antenna built directly into its own deployment spool, giving portable operators a quick, tidy way to get on the air without carrying a separate wire winder.
The SPOOLTENNA PARKS-EFHW4010 was designed specifically for portable amateur-radio operation. Its complete 65 ft radiating element winds directly onto the antenna body, helping eliminate tangled wire and making deployment and pack-down considerably quicker.
The antenna is factory tuned for the 40m, 20m, 15m and 10m bands and is designed to operate on those bands without an external antenna tuner. Additional wire length is deliberately provided so that the final resonance can be adjusted for your own installation if required.
Spend Less Time Untangling Wire
Instead of carrying an antenna and a separate wire winder, the PARKS-EFHW4010 integrates the matching circuit and spool into one compact unit.
When you're finished operating, simply use the low-profile winding knob or the finger holes on the rear of the spool to wind the radiating element neatly back onto the body. The supplied BongoTies® tie then keeps everything together in your bag.
Unwind It as You Walk
The centre of the spool has an 8 mm axle hole. Insert a suitable screwdriver, pen or tent stake through the centre and simply allow the spool to rotate as you walk towards your operating position.
Pack-down is just as straightforward: use the same improvised axle and turn the winding knob to neatly recover the wire without creating the tangles and kinks normally associated with portable wire antennas.
Silicone-Insulated Tinned Copper Wire
The PARKS model uses approximately 65 ft of 20 AWG silicone-insulated tinned copper wire, forming an approximately half-wave radiating element on 40 metres.
A 4 mm banana connection allows the radiating element to be quickly disconnected from the spool for storage, maintenance or adjustment, while strain relief is provided at both ends of the wire.
No Antenna Tuner Required
Frequency ranges above are the manufacturer's quoted tuning ranges. Always operate within the frequencies permitted by your licence.
Matching Components Protected Inside the Spool
The EFHW's high feed-point impedance is transformed towards the radio's 50-ohm feed system by an integrated 49:1 UNUN. The matching circuit is captive within the spool barrel, protecting the components while keeping the complete antenna self-contained.
RF connection is through a right-angle BNC female socket, which keeps the feedline aligned neatly alongside the antenna rather than projecting straight out from the spool.
Keep the Portable Station Portable
SPOOLTENNA recommends lightweight feedline such as RG-174 or RG-316 for portable use. At typical portable HF feedline lengths these cables provide a useful balance between weight, flexibility and RF performance.
Heavy coax such as RG-8 or RG-8X can place unnecessary mechanical strain on the portable BNC connection. Whatever feedline is used, suitable strain relief is recommended.
No Separate Counterpoise Required
In the standard configuration, the outside of the coax shield provides the return path for the radiating element, so a separate counterpoise wire is not required.
As with other end-fed half-wave antennas, the manufacturer recommends considering a common-mode choke near the radio end of the feedline to prevent unwanted RF current travelling back towards the station.
Your Antenna Comes with Its Own Test Report
Every PARKS-EFHW4010 is individually field tested before it is packed. A Field Testing Report specific to that antenna's serial number is supplied with the product.
Extra Wire Left for Final Adjustment
The antenna arrives factory tuned, but SPOOLTENNA deliberately leaves additional wire available for final adjustment. Installation height, configuration and surrounding objects can all affect resonance, so the additional length gives you room to optimise the antenna for your own portable setup rather than receiving an element that has already been cut too short.
