Chelegance JDIPOLE-540: Five-Band HF Coverage in a Compact Rooftop Antenna

Five bands from 40m to 6m, 1kW SSB power handling and a 1:1 balun included in the box. The Chelegance JDIPOLE-540 is a rigid V-dipole designed for operators who need proper HF coverage but cannot fit a full-size antenna system on their roof or mast.

Chelegance JDIPOLE-540, now in stock at ML&S

The Chelegance JDIPOLE-540 is a compact five-band rigid HF V-dipole antenna covering 40m, 20m, 15m, 10m and 6m from a single rooftop or mast-mounted installation. It is specifically designed for fixed stations where space is limited but compromising on band coverage is not an option.

It is now in stock at ML&S, supplied complete with a 1:1 balun and a four-piece 7MHz capacitor hat array.

The Problem It Solves

Multi-band HF coverage from a fixed station traditionally means one of three things: a large beam antenna on a rotator, a collection of separate wire or vertical antennas, or a compromise single-band antenna paired with an ATU. Each of those has drawbacks in a space-limited installation, whether it is the turning radius of a beam, the visual clutter of multiple antennas, or the efficiency losses of a heavily mismatched ATU.

The JDIPOLE-540 takes a different approach. It is a V-dipole, which means the two driven elements angle outward from a central feedpoint rather than lying flat in a traditional horizontal dipole arrangement. This V-shape shortens the effective horizontal span considerably while the antenna still operates as a proper driven element rather than a loaded or compromised alternative. After initial installation and adjustment, switching between all five supported bands requires no physical changes to the antenna itself.

Band Coverage and How It Works

The JDIPOLE-540 covers five amateur radio bands from a single antenna system:

  • 40m (7MHz) with the supplied four-piece capacitor hat array to achieve resonance within the compact form factor
  • 20m (14MHz)
  • 15m (21MHz)
  • 10m (28MHz)
  • 6m (50MHz)

The 40m capacitor hat array deserves a mention, as it is the engineering solution that makes the compact size possible on the lowest band. Rather than requiring full-size quarter-wave elements for 40m, the capacitor hats load the tips of the elements electrically, allowing resonance to be achieved at a fraction of the full physical length. This is a well-established technique in compact HF antenna design and, when properly adjusted, results in a genuinely resonant antenna rather than a heavily mismatched one. Chelegance quote a target SWR of 1.5:1 or better across all five bands after proper installation and adjustment.

Power Handling

The JDIPOLE-540 is rated at 1kW SSB and 500W CW, which puts it comfortably into the territory of most licensed UK amateur radio operators running legal power levels. It is not a QRP-only antenna, and it is not a compromise that requires you to back off power to protect the feedpoint. Whether you are running a modern 100W transceiver, a mid-range amplifier or the full legal limit on SSB, the antenna handles it without issue.

What Is Included

  • JDIPOLE-540 rigid multi-section V-dipole antenna assembly
  • 1:1 current balun (fitted at the feedpoint)
  • 7MHz capacitor hat array (4 pieces) for 40m operation
  • SO-239 coaxial connector at the feedpoint
  • Assembly and adjustment documentation
The 1:1 balun is included in the box. This is worth noting because many compact HF antennas at this price point require a separately purchased balun. The JDIPOLE-540 ships ready to connect to your coax run, with the balun already fitted at the feedpoint.

Installation Requirements

The JDIPOLE-540 is designed for fixed rooftop or mast installation. It is not a portable or field-deployable antenna. The mast it mounts to should be between 40 and 50mm in diameter, which covers most standard amateur radio mast sections.

Chelegance recommend a minimum installation height of 5 metres above ground and nearby obstructions for best performance, particularly on the lower bands. As with any HF antenna, performance will be influenced by installation height, surrounding structures, feedline quality and the local RF environment, so the higher and clearer the installation, the better the results on all five bands.

The antenna is wind-rated to 90 to 100 km/h (around 56 to 62 mph), which covers typical UK weather conditions for a properly mounted installation. As with any outdoor antenna, waterproofing the coaxial connector joint after installation is strongly recommended, and grounding and lightning protection should be considered as part of the installation plan.

Who Is This Antenna For?

The JDIPOLE-540 is aimed squarely at the large number of amateur radio operators who want genuine multi-band HF capability from a fixed station but face real constraints on what they can install. That includes urban and suburban operators with limited roof space, operators in properties with restrictive covenants or planning sensitivities where a large beam would be difficult to justify, and operators who simply want a cleaner, single-antenna installation rather than a collection of separate aerials.

It is equally relevant to newer operators setting up their first proper fixed HF station who want to cover the main bands without committing to multiple separate antennas, and to more experienced operators who have outgrown a compromise single-band antenna and want to step up to proper five-band coverage in a compact format.

Closing Thoughts

At £249.95 with a balun and capacitor hat array included, the JDIPOLE-540 offers a well-thought-out solution to one of the most common challenges in fixed-station HF operating: getting five-band coverage onto a mast or rooftop without needing the space for a full-size antenna system. The rigid V-dipole format keeps the rotation radius remarkably compact, the 1kW SSB power rating means no concessions on transmit power, and the included balun and 40m capacitor hat array mean the antenna arrives genuinely ready to install rather than requiring additional purchases before it can be used.

For operators with limited space who want a proper, permanent, multi-band HF antenna rather than a series of compromises, it is worth a serious look.
