The best portable antenna is the one that is actually in the air when you are operating. That sounds obvious, but it rules out a surprising number of designs that require pre-cut wires for each band, a separate matching box, or a tuner that needs to survive being rattled around in a rucksack all the way up a hill. The Wonder Wand End Fed Half Wave takes all of that complexity off the table. One wire, one BNC connection to the back of your radio, and you have four bands to play with.

The EFHW is a well-established antenna design that works by cutting a half-wave wire for the lowest band you want to use. On a 40m EFHW, that wire is also a full wave on 20m, three half-waves on 15m and two full waves on 10m. Because those are all whole numbers of half-waves, the feed point impedance is high at each frequency and the matching transformer handles them all efficiently. The result is genuine resonance on four bands from a single element, with no tuner required and no wire changes between bands.

Four Bands From One Wire: How It Works

The supplied 20m wire element is the key to the whole system. Cut for resonance on 40m, it also presents a suitable feed impedance on 20m, 15m and 10m thanks to the harmonic relationships between those frequencies. Wonder Wand's high-quality PCB matching unit, built with proper ferrites and zero hot glue or resin in sight, handles the impedance transformation cleanly at each band.

The practical benefit of this is significant. You put the wire up once and you can move between all four bands freely. During a POTA activation you might open on 40m for regional contacts, move to 20m to work further afield, then jump to 10m or 15m if a solar-assisted opening appears. None of that requires touching the antenna. Just change band on the radio and call CQ.

One wire, properly matched on four bands. This is not a broadband compromise design trying to cover everything acceptably. Each of the four supported bands is a genuine harmonic resonance of the same wire, which is why no tuner is needed. You get the efficiency of a resonant antenna on each band, not a broadband approximation.

What Is In the Box

The Wonder Wand EFHW ships as a complete, ready-to-use system. Everything you need to get on the air is included:

  • The Wonder Wand EFHW matching unit, with BNC connector, built on high-quality PCB with proper ferrites. No hot glue, no resin, no sealant.
  • One 20m resonant wire element, pre-cut for 40m operation and covering 20m, 15m and 10m via harmonic resonance.
  • A 5m counterpoise wire, to be laid out away from the feed point for best performance.

Radio, mast, fishing pole, coaxial cable and other accessories are not included.

Three Ways to Deploy It

The BNC connection means the matching unit clips straight onto the back of your radio, keeping the whole system as compact as possible. From there, how you deploy the wire depends entirely on what the activation site offers:

  1. Radio-mounted, wire sloped or horizontal The fastest setup of all. The matching unit connects directly to the radio's BNC socket and the wire runs out from there at whatever angle works. Ideal when you are operating from a bench, a rock, or any position where you can prop the far end of the wire up on something or lay it across the ground.
  2. Raised on a fishing pole Run the wire up a 5m or 7m fishing pole and you have a vertical or inverted-L that puts the radiating element properly in the air. This is the most popular approach for SOTA and POTA activators who carry a fibreglass pole as standard field kit, and it gives the best all-round performance across all four bands.
  3. Thrown into a tree Find a suitable branch, throw a line over it and haul the wire up into the canopy. The Wonder Wand EFHW is light enough that even a modest throw will get it airborne. A wire high in a good tree is hard to beat, and this approach costs nothing beyond a bit of patience with the throw.

Built the Right Way

Wonder Wand's approach to construction is worth calling out because it matters in the field. The matching unit is built on a proper printed circuit board with quality ferrites, not glued together with hot glue or sealed with resin. That distinction is important for two reasons:

  • Reliability. Hot glue and resin can crack, absorb moisture, and fail in ways that are impossible to diagnose or repair. A properly constructed PCB-based unit is significantly more robust in outdoor use over time.
  • Repairability. If something ever did need attention, a PCB-based unit can be inspected and worked on. A resin-potted unit cannot.

The BNC connector is the right choice for a portable antenna used at 25W. It is compact, it mates positively, and it is the standard antenna connector on most portable transceivers including the Icom IC-705, Yaesu FT-818, and the majority of QRP radios used for SOTA and POTA. If your radio uses a different connector, a BNC adaptor is all you need.

The counterpoise matters more than you might think. Lay the 5m counterpoise out on the ground away from the feed point, in a direction away from the main wire if possible. Bundling it up next to the radio or letting it hang straight down will not give you the same performance. Thirty seconds spent laying it out properly is worth it across all four bands.

Who Is the Wonder Wand EFHW For?

It is aimed squarely at operators who want to get on the air quickly and cleanly from wherever they happen to be, without carrying more equipment than necessary or spending the first twenty minutes of an activation fiddling with an antenna system. In particular it suits:

  • SOTA activators who want genuine four-band HF capability from a single lightweight antenna that goes up fast and comes down fast, especially useful for catching both low-band 40m contacts and high-band 15m and 10m openings from the same summit.
  • POTA operators who want flexibility across the HF spectrum during a single activation without swapping wires or reaching for a tuner every time conditions suggest a band change.
  • QRP operators running 5 to 25W who want a resonant antenna rather than a loaded whip or compromise design, since a resonant half-wave is one of the most efficient portable antenna types available at any power level.
  • Lightweight travellers who need something that takes up almost no space in a bag and can be operational anywhere a wire can be thrown over a tree or a pole pushed into the ground.
